6 Tips for a Cavity-Free Halloween

Halloween is all about costumes, decorations, and, of course, candy! But how much of a risk is Halloween candy for teeth?
The medical name for cavities is dental caries, and it’s the most widespread childhood disease, so as you can imagine, Halloween candy poses a pretty significant risk to your child’s dental health. Dr. Shawn Saidian, along with our helpful staff at Century City Smiles & Orthodontics, has put together this list of six tips to help you avoid cavities and maintain good dental hygiene during the spooky season.
1. Timing matters
Keep in mind that when you eat candy matters. For example, having some shortly after a meal is not as bad as having it as a snack in the middle of the day. That’s because when you eat a meal, you produce more saliva, and that naturally washes away some of the sugar.
When sugar clings to your teeth, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive—and the result is dental caries.
2. Sugar-free gum can help
The American Dental Association (ADA) maintains a list of approved sugar-free gums. Chewing sugar-free gum can help your mouth produce saliva, and that can help protect your teeth from the extra sugar in Halloween candy.
3. Chocolate is a good choice
It may come as a surprise, but chocolate is a pretty good choice for a treat. It doesn’t stick to your teeth as badly as some other kinds of candy—plus it’s the most popular Halloween treat. Dark chocolate is even better than milk chocolate, but it’s not exactly a well-known favorite for kids.
4. Sticky and sour are the worst choices
Hard candy and gummies are especially bad about sticking to your teeth, and aren’t the best option. Sour candies, too, can be problematic because they contain high levels of dietary acids that can damage the enamel on your teeth.
5. Maintain a careful hygiene routine
Your at-home dental hygiene routine is more important than ever when there’s Halloween candy involved. Depending on your child's age, you may want to help them thoroughly brush and floss after they’ve enjoyed candy.
Removing as much of the decay-inviting sugar as possible is a good way to limit the damage extra candy can cause.
6. Keep your regular dental appointments
Visiting Dr. Saidian for regular checkups and professional cleanings is the best way to ensure your oral health remains stellar. At-home hygiene is crucial, but our team can reach places you can’t, and keep your teeth clean and healthy!
